Abstract

The Indonesia Smart Card (KIP) Lecture Program is an affirmative policy that aims to open access to higher education for students from underprivileged families. This research aims to find out the form of educational motivation of KIP recipient students and its impact in efforts to get out of poverty. The approach used is qualitative with a case study method. Data were obtained through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation of KIP recipient students at UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta. The results showed that students' motivation was formed in four main aspects: (1) the desire to improve personal and family living standards, (2) the spirit to change the social stigma against children from poor families, (3) the urge to be an inspiration for the surrounding environment, and (4) efforts to build independence and self-confidence through education. These motivations have a real impact in shaping fighting power, commitment to completing studies, and awareness of the importance of education as a long-term investment. In addition to improving academic performance and involvement in non-academic activities, students also show a proactive attitude in preparing for the future, such as joining organizations, training, and internships. KIP scholarships are not only a financial solution, but also a strategic tool in creating sustainable social transformation. Thus, strong motivation, supported by affirmative policies, is an important key in students' efforts to escape structural poverty through education.
